Project Description

Located in Oakville, California, the Kendall-Jackson Cardinale Winery Barrel Building can store up to 30,000 barrels of wine under the right conditions for an extended period of time to ensure the development of complex flavors.

Correct storage ensures intensified aromas, deepens color and enhances flavor nuances. The design philosophy of the Cardinale Winery Barrel Building was to provide a simple design structure reflective of the region’s architecture and agricultural history.

To minimize the large facility’s impact on the surrounding neighbors, the structure is only visible from the loading dock area. The Barrel Building is screened from neighbors by a gabion wall. The 90,000-square-foot concrete building consists of poured-in-place concrete columns and shotcrete perimeter walls.

The roof structure is composed of spancrete hollowcore planking with a four-foot topping slab. The finished building was 90% backfilled including one foot of soil on the roof. The mechanical system consists of only cooling with the option to use night cooling when the outside temperature drops below a desired temperature.
