Project Description
The Central Utility Plant (CUP) Expansion at UC Davis Health is a transformative infrastructure project designed to support campus growth while advancing sustainable energy initiatives. Approved by the UC Board of Regents, this expansion is a critical step in transitioning the campus to a more sustainable energy future.
The CUP Expansion (CUPx) is driven by the increasing utility demands of major upcoming projects, including the California Tower and 48X Complex, both essential to UC Davis Health’s future development. The California Tower, set to open in 2030, requires additional utility capacity, making this expansion a vital investment in campus infrastructure.
Beyond supporting growth, the project aligns with UC Davis’ Policy on Sustainable Practices, targeting net zero greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 2025. By integrating SMUD’s 100% renewable energy program, Greenergy, the CUP Expansion helps reduce reliance on fossil fuels, setting a roadmap for further emissions reductions and sustainable campus growth through 2035.
This project is being delivered in collaboration with a leading design-build team, including Nacht & Lewis, Buehler, Affiliated Engineers, Inc., Mazzetti, Siegfried Engineering, Redwood Electric Group, Airco Mechanical, and Preston Pipelines. Together, we are developing an efficient, resilient, and environmentally responsible utility infrastructure that will serve UC Davis Health for decades to come.
The CUP Expansion reflects UC Davis Health’s commitment to sustainability, innovation, and community well-being—helping to lead the way in reducing its carbon footprint while ensuring reliable utility services for future generations.
Project Highlights:
