RUDOLPH AND SLETTEN ‘LEEDS’ THE WAY WITH ITS CORPORATE RELOCATION, NAMED IN A PILOT PROGRAM TO DESIGN SUSTAINABILITY INTO THE INTERIOR OF ITS CORPORATE HEADQUARTERS

FOSTER CITY, CA (June 1, 2005)—Rudolph and Sletten General Contractors will relocate its corporate headquarters from Foster City to the Pacific Shores Center in Redwood City on August 1, going green in the process.

As a leader in sustainable building practices, Rudolph and Sletten is so committed to building responsibly that they will be putting their sustainable building practices to work on their new corporate headquarters.

Rudolph and Sletten will be one of the first to participate in the LEED-CI version 2.0 program and will design their new space to LEED Gold standards. This space will maximize the use of existing finishes, utilize natural daylight in over 90% of all regularly occupied areas, and incorporate innovative ideas such as using existing doors as finished countertops.

Other sustainable building practices that will be incorporated into the interior include waterless urinals, low flow lavatories, materials which are rapidly renewable, and enhanced systems commissioning. Rudolph and Sletten will also provide an incentive to any employee at corporate headquarters who chooses to use an eco-friendly transportation method.

“We believe that sustainable construction is the future,” said Allen Rudolph, President and CEO of Rudolph and Sletten. “We have positioned the company to be a leader within this segment of the industry and are now able to lead the construction industry into an entirely new era. Sustainable construction uses materials and methods that meet the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. It represents an evolution of the building industry.”

In addition to their new headquarters, Rudolph and Sletten has been the general contractor for many of California’s leading sustainable construction projects, including the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory Molecular Foundry, Sun Microsystems Santa Clara Campus, Shaklee World Headquarters, and the Alum Rock Youth Center in San Jose.

As a leader in innovative industry training and green building practices, Rudolph and Sletten has more Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Accredited Professionals than any other construction firm in the state with 125 Rudolph and Sletten staff members holding LEED accreditations.

To serve clients who want green buildings, Rudolph and Sletten has also developed numerous sustainable preconstruction and construction teams, including project executives, project managers, estimators, MEP estimators, MEP coordinators, superintendents, and project engineers, all of whom are LEED accredited.

President and CEO Allen Rudolph says that more and more of the company’s clients are considering various aspects of sustainable construction because of the many benefits that this type of construction affords. “Owners can realize substantial savings from the reuse and recycling of construction materials,” he said.

“Other benefits include reduced operating costs from lower energy expenses and reduced water usage. The types of working environments that we are creating with lots of natural lighting and enhanced indoor environmental quality actually increases employee productivity, and represents a proven employee incentive. Finally, many owners are convinced that this is the right thing to do and feel very positive about building these types of facilities.”

About The Pacific Shores Campus
In 2000, Rudolph and Sletten constructed the 1.7 million square foot, 106-acre development in record time and will soon be occupying the third floor in one of the office buildings at the development. Pacific Shores owner, Jay Paul, created this urban center with an eye toward preserving and enhancing the natural surroundings.

The business park consists of 11 smart buildings incorporating state-of-the-art technology and a green building design as well as 50 acres of park and landscaped areas, a 1,500-seat outdoor amphitheater, more than three miles of waterfront paths for walking and biking, as well as basketball courts and regulation soccer, baseball, and softball athletic fields. Another notable aspect of this construction project was the restoration of tidal wetlands on Deepwater Slough Island.

Rudolph and Sletten worked under the direction of the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Services, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, San Francisco Bay Conservation and Development Commission, California Department of Fish and Game, and an on-site biologist to carefully restore the natural elevation of this tidal habitat.

About the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design Program (LEED)
There are approximately 121 LEED-certified green buildings in the U.S. and 1,400 in the design or construction phase. Federal, state, and local governments have built 40% of the LEED-certified projects. The U.S. Green Building Council (www.usgbc.org), a coalition of building industry leaders, has developed the LEED certification process to rate projects on five areas of sustainability, including sustainable sites (sites that are environmentally friendly); water efficiency, energy and atmosphere (providing energy efficiency and a pollution free environment); materials and resources (the use of recycled products that do not contain pollutants); indoor environmental quality, and innovation and design process. Depending on the total points achieved, a project can be certified as platinum, gold, silver or certified.
